Fluoroscopy
Your stomach must be as empty as possible. You must not eat or drink after 10 P.M. the night before your exam, nor smoke or chew gum. You may brush your teeth, but avoid swallowing water.
Barium enema:
No solid food allowed during preparation for this exam.
Two days before exam:
Unrestricted amounts of clear liquids ONLY, such as water, clear juice, pop, Gatorade, consommé, black coffee, tea, and Jell-O. Continue with instructions below.
Day before exam:
Unrestricted amounts of clear liquids ONLY, such as water, clear juice, pop, Gatorade, consommé, black coffee, tea, and Jell-O. At 5:00 P.M. drink one glass of clear liquid in addition to above. At 6:00 P.M. drink one 10 oz. (300ml) bottle of Magnesium Citrate. This can be purchased at your pharmacy. At 7:00 P.M. take three 5 mg tablets of Dulcolax.
Day of examination:
Insert 10 mg Dulcolax, suppository and wait 10 minutes before evacuating. Eat nothing the morning of examination, but drink clear fluids only. Drink plenty of water for 2 days after the exam. For these exams only, diabetics should consult their physicians regarding possible stoppage or reduction of insulin while fasting or on "clear liquid only" diet.
